LIBRARY >> STORIES The sacred ash tree in front of Bru na Boinne has been cut down. One of our group "Red John" sent us the images with the following email -

I was passing by Newgrange this morning and to my shock, the tree where you have held the sun standing on the Winter Solstice for the last couple of years has been cut down. It knocked me a little as I always remember you saying that the tree formed part of our circle during the ceremony. I feel it was also guardian of the place. She is a sad loss.

From the section of the main trunk still lying on the ground (see photo) there appears to be some damage from disease, but on the whole it looks healthy.

I also witnessed the whislte-stop Paddywagon Tour at Dowth a little while later. I was on the east side of the temple. I heard some car doors banging and distant voices. About 5 mins later as I walked back to my car, I surprised to see about 20 tourists wandering back to their min-bus, all looking very lost. I thought how can anyone experience the beauty and energy in 5mins or less (I would think it would be longer if there was a coffee shop). On their website you can "do" the 'Cliffs of Moher' from Dublin in a day.

My comment.
The ash tree was not rotten (see images) or causing danger to anyone, nor was it in the way of any new toll road. It was often a member of our circle when we held winter sun standing (solstice in latin) ceremony for the middle of the shortest day for the last four years. Maybe that is why they cut it down? Who knows? Even if you did know and were able to prove that the state authorities caused this huge ash tree to be cut down because Pagan Druids held ceremony with it - what would that do or mean? In ancient times there would be a fine for needlessly cutting a big tree down. Today, even if such fines could be applied the state would only pay themselves the fine out of tax payers money and laugh at us all.

This is the current attitude to our native culture and heritage by the authorities of the state. They are meant to serve the people but instead they serve some hidden agenda.

The poor deluded 'see Ireland in one day tourists' have only their budget to blame for suffering such a poor quality vision of our ancient culture. I am always reminded of the time I saw some American tourists get off the bus at Tara - 'do' the coffee shop, the church and the 18th century St Patrick's statue and say "is that all there is" as they went quickly back to the bus.
