LIBRARY >> STORIES Alternative Spiritualities, the New Age and New Religious Movements in Ireland:
Interdisciplinary conference.

National University of Ireland, Maynooth
October 30th - 31st, 2009

In recent decades, the religious landscape of the island of Ireland has transformed dramatically. New religious movements and what is sometimes called the "New Age" have flourished along with numerous ways of healing and being that are not easily classified.

There will be over 40 presenters from 8 countries and a wide range of academic backgrounds including Sociology, Psychology; Anthropology, Religious Studies, Computing, Ethnology, European Studies, Folklore, History of Art, Human Geography, Irish studies, and theology.

There will be papers on such areas as:
Feminist spirituality; the marketing & consumption of spirituality etc; the internet & the occult; Astrology in Ireland; Shamanic healing; Healing, Self-healing, and mainstream (Church) responses to Reiki; Celtic Spirituality; Paganism; A Course in Miracles; Sai Baba; Irish Buddhism; Catholicism as a New Religious Movement, Why evangelicalism is growing; Charismatics; Islam in Ireland; Pentecostalism; the ‘New Age Movement’; and more.

The conference is open to the public and we welcome interest from the mainstream churches, alternative practitioners, the media and other interested parties.
However, it should be remembered that this is an academic conference - it is not a venue for debating the truth or the value of any particular belief or practice.
