LIBRARY >> GALLERY Rathkineely at Rath Croghan 09
In the ancient Pagan city of Rath Croghan / Cruachan in north Roscommon there is a hilltop monument called Rathkineely. It is the highest point in the complex of Queen Meave's fort. This is the area where Dathai, the last Pagan King of Ireland was buried, where the Cave of the Cats releases terrible monsters and where the Drui had their Stone Fort of the Sea God - Cashel Manannan. Huge ceremonial enclosures with famous stones and ancient wells and incredible stories of our Gaelic and pre-Gaelic history intensify the sense of connectedness with the Ancestors at Rath Croghan / Cruachan. We have begun a 'mapping the Sacred Energy Lines' in this area and will continue to expand on our current knowledge in 2010.

Mike Croghan grew up and now lives with his wife Dee at the foot of Rathkineely. As a follow up to his BA in Archaeology with NUIG Mike undertook a full but non-invasive study of Rathkineely. He may have found a Henge, or circular post temple of the type known as a 'woodhenge' on Rathkineely. His research is ongoing. During October of 09 I went with Mike to the top of Rathkineely in his 4x4. Amazing views of monuments on the horizon perimeter of a huge circle with Rathkineely at its centre reminded me of the Henge discovered at Tara (which has been destroyed to suit Opus Dei and the NRA's forced toll road). The hilltop enclosure allows a 360* view for mile after mile and Mikes familiarity with the local monuments has prompted much debate and discussion on the importance of Rathkinnely.(Mike offers a guided tour of the region and specializes in Bog Oak Carvings)

On the morning of the Winter Sun Standing 21 Dec 09, Mike and a friend made it to the top of Rathkinnely before the Sun had appeared. Covered in snow, cold and exposed to wind they got two beautiful sequenced images of the Sun rising on the solstice 09 morning.

Note carefully the line of the horizon actually goes through the Sun. That is to say - you can see the entire Sun even though only the top half is above the horizon. This is the magic of the Water in the atmosphere bending the Light as it (the 3 bands of 4* degree water in our atmosphere) acts as a lens. The angle was approx 135* east of north after 8:15am. I have not modified these images except to size them for the internet.
