STORIES
For those of us who appreciate and marvel at the mirror of nature, there is probably no better species which best describes our own spiritual journey than the salmon. It appears throughout many cultures and not least of all, in Celtic mythology. It should not surprise us that a salmon towards the end of its life cycle and having spawned is called a Kelt.
Its amazing journey begins after it has fallen in the form of an egg from the female, and rests in the riverbed where it is fertilized by the male. Its only requirements are Earth (the riverbed), Air (oxygen in the water), Fire (heat and light from the sun), Water (to enable its journey & survival), and Spirit (its will to complete its life's purpose). Just one example of a sacred pentagram reflected by nature for us.
There are seven stages to its development, each stage having a significant meaning to our own spiritual evolution - redds, alevin, fry, parr, smolt, salmon and kelt. Eggs are laid in the Autumn and hatch in the Spring. During the smolt stage, the body chemistry of this magnificent fish changes, preparing it for the transition from fresh water to salt water as it prepares to make its way to the ocean of life. The journey is not easy and full of hazards, but the salmon swims on. In the ocean, it achieves temporary freedom, learns more about itself and others, lives with the laws of nature, takes only what it needs to survive, grows and matures and finally returns to the place of its birth to spawn and eventually die.
The salmon is driven by instinct and must swim against the stream or current to return to its final resting place. Those who do not and simply 'go with the flow', do not fulfill their destiny. One of the most beautiful sights in this world is to watch the flash of silver as a huge salmon rises from the water and attempts to leap up a waterfall, where it instinctively knows that the higher place is its home, point of origin, and final place of rest. It also knows that all life begins and ends here and its purpose is to contribute to the continuation of life. It is the eternal cycle of birth, death and rebirth.
Through death, the body of the salmon enriches both the soil and the water with nutrients from its body. If carried away by predators, it helps to feed another species. Nothing is wasted. Little is taken and much is given. The entire purpose of the salmon is to journey and to create life. It would serve us well to imitate this for that is ultimately our purpose of being - moving from where we have fallen (our riverbed) to the ocean of the world, never forgetting our ultimate goal of returning eventually to where we originated. Like the salmon, we were created in a higher place by both male and female energy, in its likeness, and it is to this place that we all return, call it what we wish.
Like the rivers and seas the salmon dwell in, our world too has become polluted. Many of us are drowning in the shallow pools of negativity and hatred and are not reaching our 'higher place'. The drift nets of the material world are placed before us, capturing us, preventing us from moving on, predators hide behind their camoflage, determined to prevent us from moving on. We must be strong to overcome this. We must be prepared to face whatever challenges are placed in front of us. The salmon does not give up after its first leap, it will continue trying, battling its way upstream.
We have already entered the smolt stage of our spiritual evolution, great changes are taking place inside each and every one of us, we are making changes to our lives and releasing our past. The rivers we are swimming in are faster, the dangers greater. We are surrounded by the debris of chaos and confusion which has been dredged up by the great flood of knowledge we are experiencing. This will pass. We need to gather our strength for that final leap and when we get there - we achieve peace - inner peace, and the knowledge of all our lives and that of others become clear to us - as clear as the water we are swimming in. Have courage and have strength. Open your mind.
