TARA na Ri
Dear friends,
A great tragedy has befallen our country with the attack on the Tara-Skryne Valley and all it symbolises. We ask you to join the Campaign to Save Tara in the protection of our ancient heritage. Please read on. This site is the ancient Royal City of Tara, the seat of the High Kings of Ireland. It is also the epicentre of our ancient spiritual traditions; the heart of Ireland. The World Monuments Fund lists it as one of the Top 100 most endangered sites in the world. Opus Dei has had a creeping influence on the American administration for some decades and we now see our politicians being subservient to the U.S. (adopting the American capitalist mentality and allowing Shannon to be used by the U.S air force for torture flights). The Irish HQ of Opus Dei (hiding in the Lismullen Institute in Tara Valley) has now stamped itself upon our ancient landscapes. The dilution and eradication of our past is being aided by Opus Dei’s encouragement of the M3 double toll road being forced through the Tara-Skryne Valley on its current course. This is akin to ploughing through Ayers rock, sacred to the Aboriginal folk.
How did 500 archaeologists and €30million allow the oversight of an ancient burial complex, the size of three football pitches containing a huge Henge and the resting place of a high status woman in the sacred valley of the White Mare Gaelic Goddess? Is it simply because someone has paid for this blinkered vision? Ancient bones found in the excavated soil that had been tossed aside and when saved and displayed - were then deliberately driven over repeatedly and destroyed by subcontracted workers. There is photographic evidence of this below. There has been much spin on the antiquity of remains and graves at the site but the fact is that the National Roads Authority’s (NRA) PR folk are merely spin-doctors, not qualified archaeologists. There is a determined heavy-handed approach to this excavation as the NRA want this double toll road in place before a U-turn can be made. Recent examples of destruction were the discoveries last Saturday, June 23rd, of an underground stone passageway with wooden entrances and an underground stone chamber. Already the capstone has been broken and the site has been left exposed to the elements. This illustrates a complete disregard for Tara-Skryne and what lies beneath.
A dark hidden force has robbed Mr. Bertie Ahern, the NRA, Bord Pleanála, and former Minister for the Environment Mr. Dick Roche of their senses. Despite ongoing protests and petitions from leading academics and scholars from across the globe the last administration remained hell bent on forcing the M3 double toll road through the Tara-Skryne Valley. This is still the case with the current administration. There is a much shorter and less expensive (by €40million) proposed Orange Route, to the west of Tara-Skryne.
The Chamber of Commerce should be up in arms. Why not? Normally one toll is a thorny issue anywhere else but TWO are accepted in this case without question. That Navan will be a town surrounded by tolls is completely ignored by the local media. This is because the government has told Meath County Council and local businesses that the road has to pay for itself. No tolls equal no road. Giving the guarantee, which is the Tara Interchange, of generating high tolling revenue the concept of the M3 was sold to the Public & Private Partnerships (PPP). The Green Party’s General Election campaign held the issue of the halting and rerouting of the M3 double toll road as key. This garnered them the votes from all those who hold our environment and heritage sacred. Having struck a deal with Bertie Ahern/Fianna Fáil one needs to ask the question: at what cost? There has been no formal statement from the now Minister for the Environment, Heritage, & Local Government, Mr. John Gormley of the Green Party to save Tara-Skryne. Nor has there been such from any member, including Acting Leader Mr. Trevor Sargeant and Deputy Leader Mrs. Mary White. There was no sign of abandoning Tara in their Draft Programme for Government completed on 12th June or within any subsequent copy or sound-byte. Mary White is actually e-mailing our people and requesting that they stop voicing their hearts, hopes, and expectations to Mr. John Gormely. Let the Green Party be reminded that people who want to save Tara-Skryne, voted for the Greens because the Greens said they would Save Tara Valley.
We have also reminded Minister Gormley that as a newly elected Minister he now has the power under the National Monuments Act 2004, Section 14A (4)(d) where according to Section 22 of the Interpretation Act 2005 a Minister has the power to revoke or amend previous directions. This section states “A power conferred by an enactment to make a statutory instrument shall be read as including a power, exercisable in the like manner and subject to the like consent and conditions (if any) to repeal or amend a statutory instrument made under that power and (where required) to make another statutory instrument in place of the one so repealed.”
Mary White states that John Gormley is doing, and will do, all he can to save Tara-Skryne. However, this comes subsequent to (one of the authors of this flyer) being told by Minister Gormley himself that his hands are legally tied on this matter. That he has sought legal advice on this from the new Attorney General. We reminded him advice is merely advice, not an order of compliance. But more incredible is that the new Attorney General, Paul Gallagher SC, acted for Meath County Council last year and opposed a bid to stop construction. At this time he said there was ‘no basis’ for this unless a National Monument was discovered. But in April of this year a prehistoric ritual site was discovered at Lismullen (beside Opus Dei) and designated as a National Monument. Yet the biased Mr. Gallagher still insists that Mr. Gormley’s hands are legally tied. Mr. Gormley remains compliant and does not use the powers given to him under the National Monuments Act 2004 & Interpretation Act 2005.
It has become apparent that the Green Party has abandoned Tara-Skryne and all she represents to get into government. It seems to date that politicians cannot be trusted to make decisions on the preservation of our ancient heritage for the future generations because there is an agenda to destroy our Gaelic Heritage for personal gain. So far the past and present administrations have wilfully neglected their duty with both Ministers of the Environment & Heritage displaying abdication of their responsibilities. If those who were voted into government to save Tara-Skryne cannot do so - it is now down to the people who cherish our heritage and environment. What is needed right now is for you to come out to the sacred valley of Tara, and show your support. In solidarity we ask you, your family, and friends to join the Campaign to Save Tara. Having your supportive presence there will show the government just how important Tara-Skryne remains to the people. Some people have been living on site since the Summer Solstice 2006 and held a permanent protesting presence and monitor the illegal work and desecration at Tara-Skryne. At the Summer Solstice of 2006 a fire was lit to symbolise the enduring spirit of Tara-Skryne and her people, and this has been kept burning for over a year and a day.
Blessings,
Kit Ó’Marcaigh
